We shall be based in the charming, historic town of Vence, steeped in art and culture. It has been the favourite location of many international artists, including Monet, Picasso, Chagall and Matisse. The town is located 15 miles (24kms) N.W. of Nice, surrounded by hillsides studded with cypresses, olive trees and pines. Flowers grow in profusion, thriving in the mild climate.
Originally a Roman settlement, Vence continued as a medieval walled town. The old cobbled alleyways and vaulted passageways exist to this day creating many quaint corners. The 17th century Eglise de la Conversion de Saint Paul now houses a contemporary art gallery. Today, the town still has a thriving artistic community, galleries, boutiques and many good restaurants.
The 3*Hotel Diana will provide our accommodation for 7 nights with a buffet breakfast included. All rooms are en-suite, many with a garden view. This boutique hotel is located only a few minutes walk from the centre of the old town. The original thick stone walls surround the old town, with only 5 doorways ( Portes) allowing entry to the centre. There are lovely vistas from vantage points along the walls. Hotel Diana has its own garden and a rooftop terrace with stunning views and a hot tub. The breakfast room will be at our disposal for afternoon painting demonstrations and critiques. We’ll use the local cafes and restaurants for evening dinners and lunches.
Early in the week we’ll pay a visit to the delightful village of Tourettes-sur-Loup. It is a Bastide, fortified site, perched on a rocky outcrop. Here you can explore the maze of tiny streets of this authentic village, which houses more than 30 galleries and studios. The famous winter flowering violets are cultivated on nearby terraces. As well as being made into a delicate perfume, the violet flavoured chocolate and ice cream can be sampled in the local shops and cafes.
Our visit to Nice, mid week will include the famous Promenade des Anglais and daily flower market of the Cours Saleya. Numerous galleries and cafes form part of the city’s rich heritage. Wonderful water features, wide boulevards and chic shopping malls add to the magic of this enchanting city. A quick visit to a remarkable art shop, Charvin will satisfy your ‘retail therapy’.
The famous village of St Paul de Vence is a short bus ride from Vence and provides numerous opportunities to use your camera and sketch pad. The many galleries show a wide range of modern art. The famous restaurant Colombe d’Or and outdoor sculptures add to the artistic atmosphere. You can sketch from the ramparts, with lovely views of the French countryside.
